Learn to carve the classic form of the human female torso with the renowned Don Floren of Portland, Oregon. Achieve a solid understanding of anatomy and proportions - a must for carvers who want to step outside their comfort zone!
Tools required: Students should have a chisel and shallow gouge both at least 1/2" wide. They can do the project with smaller tools but it will take forever. Also, a small (approximately 1/8-inch gouge with a fairly sharp radius, say a #7 or #9. And a SHARP knife. Sandpaper, 60 0r 80 grit and 100 grit. A useful though not necessary device to have around in class is a measuring caliper. Also, the piece should be held down while they work on it, so a large C clamp (4-inch or preferably bigger) would be good. Again, I have 4 or 5 that they can use if they don't have one. A portable carvers vice would be nice. Otherwise, I have a scheme for holding with the C-clamp that will get us through. If anyone really wants to be ready for this class, study up on female anatomy before we get underway. Becoming conversant with the armpit, neck, and collarbone is particularly advantageous
