HWCA meeting minutes 03-02-08

Guest speaker was none other than locally renowned carver of realistic figures, animals, birds, relief and signage, Mr. Don Floren Some of Don's realistic human figures. Pierced relief carving of mahogany branch with leaves, carved from mahogany (of course). Female head from training with Ian Norbury Relief of swan & water

On Sunday, March 2nd, 2008, the HWCA held it's 2nd official meeting, at the Heritage Arts Studio in North Plains, Oregon. Members met from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. A wide variety of holiday goodies were consumed, lots of chips were made! Approximately 20 members attended, and from what I can tell, a good time was had by all.

Don Floren demonstrated was the guest speaker, and he displayed many of his wonderful carvings, and gave an informative talk on general carving with detailed emphasis on sign carving and lettering techniques. He also demonstrated carving an embossed lettering project. Don is a long time member of the WWA (Western Woodcarvers Association) and does quite a bit of commission work, locally. We are lucky to have Don teach an incised (recessed) and embossed (raised) lettering class on Saturday, April 5th. (see the "Classes" page for more details)

Periodically, a raffle drawing was made, in which winning members could select an item from the raffle table (wood, patterns, holiday wrapping paper and ornaments). You can't lose money in an HWCA raffle - tickets are free!

The travel agent provided more information about some of the carving related excursions available on the upcoming cruise in June. (see the cruise page for more details)

We all voted that our next meeting will be held Sunday, June 8th, 2008 - 10:00am to 5:00pm  I look forward to seeing you all, there.

Make Chips!
